Below 7°C, the rubber compound in a summer tyre hardens and loses grip — regardless of tread depth. Winter tyres use a softer, higher-silica compound that stays pliable in cold, wet, snow and ice conditions. The safety difference is not marginal: independent tests routinely show winter tyres stopping 8–15 metres shorter than summer tyres from 30mph on cold, wet UK roads.

Summer tyres are optimised for warm, dry and wet performance above 7°C. They use a harder compound that resists heat build-up on motorway runs, and tread patterns designed to disperse standing water at high speed. Fitted correctly they give the best possible braking, cornering and fuel economy in temperate UK conditions.

The tyre is the only part of your car that touches the road. Every safety-critical decision the vehicle makes — braking, cornering, aquaplaning resistance, ABS, ESP, adaptive cruise — is only as good as the four contact patches beneath you.
