Below 7°C, the rubber compound in a summer tyre hardens and loses grip — regardless of tread depth. Winter tyres use a softer, higher-silica compound that stays pliable in cold, wet, snow and ice conditions. The safety difference is not marginal: independent tests routinely show winter tyres stopping 8–15 metres shorter than summer tyres from 30mph on cold, wet UK roads.

All-season tyres used to be a compromise: worse than summers in summer, worse than winters in winter. That changed with the current generation — Michelin CrossClimate 2 and Continental AllSeasonContact 2 deliver genuine cold-weather 3PMSF certification while retaining summer wet-braking distances within 1–2m of dedicated summer tyres.

The tyre is the only part of your car that touches the road.
